2. Zidurile Cetatii / City Wall

The walls of Sibiu fortress were built in the fourteenth century and consolidated in the 17th century and are part of the 3rd fortification belt. The walls have been preserved along Coposu Street and Manej Street, as well as three defense towers: the Archebuzieri Tower, the Potty Tower and the Carpenter’s Tower. These are the best-preserved defense towers in Sibiu. The connecting wall between these towers is a recent reconstruction of the old wall that exists between them.

3. Podul Minciunilor / The Bridge of Lies

The pedestrian walkway linking the Small Square to Huet Square is popularly called “the Bridge of Lies” or “the Bridge of Lying”. Named in German: Liegenbrücke (“the lying bridge”), was soon called by the locals “the bridge of lies” due to its almost homophonous name with Lügenbrücke.

Legends:

  • A legend says that on this bridge, the lovers couples used to walk. The young people swore there eternal love, and the girls said they were virgins. But after the wedding night, it was discovered that some girls were lying. They were dragged on the bridge and thrown over the railing.
  • In Sibiu many cadets were studying at the Military Academy. They had a meeting on the bridge with the local young ladies and promised them a lot. But the girls were left to wait in vain for the men who forgot about them and the vows of love.
  • Another legend reminds of the many fairs held in the Small Square in Sibiu. When some buyers came home, they realized they were being cheated. They were returning to the marketplace and throwing the false merchants, throwing them off the bridge. As they came back to Sibiu, the merchants were afraid to cheat the locals.

  • Turnul Pielarilor / Tanners Tower

From the fourth fortification center of the old Sibiu, there are few traces left. The fourth fortification belt was designed to defend the lower part of the city. In addition to defending the portion between Ocna’s and Burger’s gates, the tower also served as a powder depot, hence its second name, the Little Powder Tower. In 2007, the Ministry of Culture handed over to the City of Sibiu documentation for the restoration of six historical sites, including the Tanners Tower, but it has not yet begun.

  • Turnul Pulberariei /  Powdery Tower

This tower was raised with the fourth fortification belt. The Powder Tower is also known as the “Great Powder Tower” and is a piece of the Great Fortification Tower of the Ocnei Gate in the city’s fourth defense belt containing bastions, defense towers, walls, towers gates, water ditches and ponds. It was built to store the powder required for heavy and light firearms and obviously to defend this area of the city.

  • Turnul Scarilor / The Stairs Tower

It is considered to be the oldest existing building in the city and is the only gate tower kept from the first fortification enclosure. It dates from the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. It is possible to have replaced an older wooden tower at the end of the 12th century. Allows access to the Lower Town through a stepped passage, the Sag Stairs.
