Dental care is just as important for a dog as it is for humans. Do not neglect your little friend’s teeth! Here’s what you can do to prevent dental problems such as bad breath, gum bleeding, or tartar.

Dental brushing

Whether you’re opting for a classic toothbrush or a microfibre or silicone toothbrush, toothbrushing remains the main solution for proper oral hygiene. The toothbrushing routine is important for dogs of all ages, and it is ideal to put it into the animal’s life when it’s puppy. Thus, he will accept this ritual more quickly.

Attention!

Do NOT use human toothpaste, most of them have fluoride, which is extremely poisonous for dogs. Choose a toothpaste for dogs.

How?

Apply 1-2 cm of paste onto a toothbrush or finger toothbrush, and clean the dog’s teeth with circular movements. Do not forget to leave a sufficient amount of water to your dog. Ingestion of toothpaste during use is not harmful.

Oral hygiene solution

Similar to mouthwash for human use, oral hygiene solutions in dogs contain antibacterial substances (chlorhexidine) that remove bacteria and food debris. No need of toothbrush, these substances are mixed in the dog’s drinking water, or applied directly to the teeth. They act both chemically and mechanically and are not toxic if swallowed.

Bones and chewing bars

These rewards maintain dental hygiene, reducing the tartar and satisfying the natural need of the dog to chew. It acts mechanically by stimulating mastication and salivary secretion, removing food debris and bacterial plaque. In commerce, find a lot of variants.

Careful!

Never give natural bones of chicken, turkey, lamb, which can fracture in sharp fragments. Recommended are the big bones of beef.

Toys for chewing

As with bones, there are toys specially designed to clean the teeth of your dog. There are many synthetic bones and chewing toys specially designed to strengthen the gums and teeth of the dog. Just make sure you choose safe items for your dog. Strong objects may cause tooth fractures. It is important to choose the correct size and type of chewing toy considering the age, weight and strength of the dog’s chewing.

Dry food

Dry food is better than soft foods, at least for the dog’s teeth. The increased hardness of the croquettes removes the bacterial plaque and prevents the appearance of tartar, while wet food favors plaque formation by penetrating food residues into interdental spaces. This is not to take away the wet food from the dog’s diet. You will find the balance, alternating the two variants.
