I’ll show you my two-day tour, and who knows, maybe the post will inspire you too, and it’ll convince you to get your friends and go out of town! Destination? Herculane baths. But do not limit yourself to just visiting a location. On your way you will go through many spectacular places you must see!
Transfagarasan
Transfagarasan is considered to be one of the most beautiful and spectacular roads in the world. Transfagarasan starts in Bascov village near Pitesti and ends at the intersection with DN1 road between Sibiu and Brasov, near Cartisoara commune. It has a length of 151 km, crossing on the north-south axis Fagaras Mountains. The portion of the Vidraru Dam to Cartisoara was built between 1970-1974, over a length of approximately 91 km. This is really impressive. A road crossing the highest mountains in Romania. Transfagarasan ranks second in altitude in the alpine highs of Romania, after Transalpina in the Parang Mountains (2145 m).
Attention! Before you go on this trip, check here if Transfagarasan is open! During the winter and spring the road is closed due to the danger of avalanches, rock falls, landslides, etc.
Vidraru Lake and Vidraru Dam
The Vidraru Dam was built on the Arges River in 1965 for power generation, irrigation and flood prevention. The lake and adjacent facilities are used for recreation, tourism and sports. Construction of the Vidraru dam lasted five and a half years starting in 1960. The dam has a height of 166,60 m and the length of the canopy is 305 m. On the dam line you will find the monument of electricity, the work of the sculptor Constantin Popovici.
Lake Balea
Lake Balea is a glacial lake located at an altitude of 2034 m in the Fagaras Mountains. The lake’s dimensions are: 360 m in length, the area of 46508 m2 and the depth of 11.35 m. In 1932 Lake Balea and an area of about 180 ha around the lake were declared a natural reserve.
Clay Castle in the Zanelor Valley
I wrote about it in an older article (you can find it here). But if you have not visited it yet, it’s an opportunity. You’re going away from the road, but I guarantee you it’s worth it!
Red Ravine
A special view, unfortunately, is poorly promoted, and poorly signaled. Red Ravine, is a protected area (geological and floral reservation), located about 4 km from Sebes. The Reservation includes specific erosion and precipitation formations that give the landscape an impressive appearance, as well as a private flora with many rare and endemic elements. If you are passionate about paleontology, you must know that the area is famous for the variety of late Cretaceous fossils discovered here. If you are interested in the subject read more here.
Regardless of your passions, the place has a special beauty and I recommend you do not miss this place!
The Corvin Castle
Arriving in Hunedoara you can let yourself be carried by the medieval atmosphere offered by the Corvin Castle. One of the most visited tourist attractions, the castle has a special charm due to various styles of construction, the presence of military and civilian innovations and the tumultuous courtyard life that has animated it for over 400 years.
